Tattoo Aftercare
The first steps in aftercare depend on the type of bandage used.
Plastic Wrap Bandage
1 – After 3 hours, remove the bandage, gently wash with warm water and mild antibacterial soap using CLEAN HANDS. Do not use anything except your hands to wash your tattoo. DO NOT REBANDAGE.
2- After washing, apply a THIN layer of Aquaphor, A&D ointment, or similar ( NOT Vaseline ), 3 times a day for the next 3 days.
3- After 3 days, use an unscented hand lotion like Lubriderm or Curel until skin returns to its pre-tattoo condition. Continue with step 4 below.
Second Skin Bandage
1- Keep bandage on for 3-4 days. If it comes off earlier, follow the above instructions for a Plastic Wrap Bandage above and skip the next two steps.
2- Remove bandage, preferably in the shower or under warm water, and wash with mild antibacterial soap.
3- Use an unscented hand lotion like Lubriderm or Curel on the tattoo until your skin returns to its pre-tattoo condition. Continue with step 4 below.
=================
4- Stay out of direct sunlight and tanning beds until the tattoo has healed; at least 7-10 days.
5- Do not soak your tattoo in a tub, sauna, jacuzzi or go swimming while your new tattoo is healing. Showers are fine, but try not to make them too hot.
6- Avoid activities that may cause sweating or irritation to the area, such as exercise or hot showers, for at least a few days after receiving your new tattoo.
7- Do not scratch or pick the treated area while it is healing. Loss of color and/or infection could occur. You may GENTLY slap your tattoo to relieve itching (slapping it too hard while it is healing can cause blowout – the ink extends beyond the intended boundaries of the design, resulting in prominent spots and possible scarring during the healing process)
8- Extreme sun and exposure over the years will fade your tattoo. This can be minimized by using a strong sunscreen; at least SPF25.
9. Your tattoo should heal in 2 weeks. Consult a physician if an signs or symptoms develop such as redness at the stie, green/yellow discharge, and/or fever.
Enjoy your new tattoo and contact me if it ever needs touching up. 🙂
